Procedure for Nickel Strike (Wood’s Nickel) (activation of stainless steel, nickel and nickel alloys) Plating on stainless steel, nickel and nickel alloys requires that the basis metal be given an activating treatment before electroplating to assure adhesion of coatings. The recommended treatment is to clean then to strike the parts in a Wood’s nickel strike solution. The work should be cleaned in a manner consistent with the base
material, rinsed, made cathodic, with nickel striking taking place at 15 to 20 asf for one minute,
or until a continuous nickel plate is obtained. The work is then rinsed and plated per requested specification.
Wood's Nickel is a nickel strike solution invented by Donald Wood[dec.] of Hill-Cross for the activation of stainless steel. Stainlesssteel quickly acquires a natural passivated film which is difficultto remove, and difficult to plate onto with good adhesion. The Wood'sNickel Strike contains a lot of HCl and is designed to simultaneouslydissolve the passivation layer and deposit nickel onto the stainlesssteel. There areother activation/striking solutions, but Wood's nickel is thestandard.
