Dandyism Rule: Ride Must Be StylishDandy gentleman prefer to be chauffeured but that’s only because there isn’t a ride suitable to the lifestyle. Bentleys and exotic imports are way to flashy. They need something more refined and subdued like the Motobecane Motivo. The electric scooter rides you around in style. The in-wheel motors are powered by a removable, rechargeable suitcase wrapped in luxurious walnut. Not as tasteless as its Japanese counterpart and no where near as brash as an American chopper.

Designer: Miguel Ángel Iranzo

Brush Can, Cleans A Fine Toothed CombYou won’t catch me on my hands and knees sweeping with an old fashioned duster. No sir I prefer to use the power of a little wonder called the Roomba but sometimes getting manual is the only way to go and the Brush Can makes it a tad easier to keep up cleaning chores. The densely packed bristles can magically clean themselves if you pull them thru combed teeth. Also a perfect way to hold the brush in place. Brills.

Difference Between Life And Death Is A LightAs if the tragedy of losing a dear one to an accident is not enough, the reason of poor street lighting just doesn’t justify the situation. A simple jog in the twilight, walking your pooch at dusk, do these circumstances warrant an accident due poor lighting or visibility? Better safe than sorry…. get visible dear! NR4 Illuminated Running Apparel is attire that integrates luminescence into the outfit, making it safer for you to take that evening run.

The clothing uses Electro Luminescent (EL) wires to add the flexibility factor to it, and the “moisture-wicking stretch fabric” won’t let you drench due to overheating. To power the lights there is a flexible, rechargeable battery that comes with a standard wall socket. You simply need to position this lightweight pack on your upper back to center its weight. Wear this, and you are ready to bedazzle the evening with the lights on your clothes!
A working prototype of this apparel has also been created and I do sincerely hope that it makes it to the shelves.

Future Cup Alert! It has the V Shape.Has this ever happened to you? *Cup ring on nose*
Well me too! Always with the cup ring on the nose from the wanting to get the liquid out of the cup. And not only that, designer AMINATION (aka Amin Saadat), has got a thing or two to say about all the “fats and bacteria from the edge of the glass.”

It’s the “Unose.” The “V” shape is just magic. As you can see, it totally works magic by way of physics. I don’t know that there’s a huge problem with germs on the ring of cups that needs to be solved, but cup tipping: there’s a worldwide pan-epidemic.
Tip up your cups! Just a little bit less.

More Vacuous Crap From ole’ MacAs Yanko regulars might notice, we post a lot of concepts from Mac Funamizu, but I’m putting my foot down and stopping the love fest here and now. This flexible OLED monitor concept which supposes the OLED material would roll up inside the white stand and allow the user to choose the optimum screen size. Supposing that the material could compact itself that tightly, he goes on and mounts a cd drive behind the translucent screen and for good measure throws some invisible projection technology in as well.

I don’t mean to be overly harsh on Mac, but the nature of design is deriving realistic solutions from the hard fast constraints that exist.  Without heeding the problems of design, it ceases to be relevant.
UPDATE:  I suppose I should have expected reactions like this and I’m glad such a discourse has a place here at YD. I do want to clarify my position slightly as I do not want to seem dismissive of the great work that is featured here on a daily basis.  Concepts are a great part of the design process as they allow you to selectively hurdle one or two constraints for the purpose of creative exploration (lord knows all I have ever done have been concepts). So I hope the dreamers out there will continue to dream and give us your beautiful, fantastic, incredible inventions.

Sculpted Phone No Different From HostaMore often than not, designers take inspiration from the natural environment to come up with something spectacular in technology. If it weren’t for the dragonflies we wouldn’t have helicopter now, would we? The project we see here is a simple home phone taking inspiration from the Hosta Plant. For those with a serious lack of green-thumb-knowledge let me tell you that it’s a foliage plant that is not fussy and comes in a broad range of solid colors.

Similar to the Hosta is the Non Literal Phone. Its basic premise is to add the beauty of a sculpture to a mundane device. A simple user interface married with a practical design, it looks ideal for the mantle place to me. Since technical info is scarce here, lets enjoy the design for a bit.

New ACT Fire Extinguisher Release PartyHave you ever run from a fire extinguisher? I haven’t. They don’t scare me. But they scare you.
They seem so important, so untouchable. Why is that? Get above the fright! Make it cool to extinguish fires. That’s what designer Sigrun Vik is all about. Keep deadly fire unfashionable with Vik’s “ACT” fire extinguisher.

White and red, wirelessly connected to your smoke detectors, and flashing lights. “A perfect balance between intuitive functions and a discreet appearance,” says Vik. I say again: make fire safety fashionable! Let’s get some basketball players in here to promote fire extinguishers.
Can you imagine people lining up for hours to purchase the ACT so they can get it signed by Kobe Bryant at the local “Streetwize Fire Safety” store? It’s the 2009 ACT Fire Extinguisher Release Party! Be there.

Flashback Fridays: Apple ComputerIn 1991 the Apple we know so well today was totally different. Steve Jobs had not yet returned to the company. Apple’s new focus was to diversify its core technologies beyond the scope of computers and CEO John Sculley was not shy about sharing the company’s secrets unlike the iron curtain Apple hangs today. Let’s take a step back and check out some of these concepts from yesteryear.

Credit: Zacislost

Guide
GPS and database mapping similar to Google Maps, except for the bicycler. Voice instructions, UI navigation via tilt ball, portable printing, and syncing.

TimeBand
Cellular wristtop computing. Making phone calls on the go while having complete access to your computer’s files. UI navigation via rollerball and wireless printing. Experimentation with high contrast monochrome displays that look like e-ink displays of today.

Multifunctional Handheld Computers and Currency Exchangers
Small devices abound in the company’s portfolio. In this handheld device, we see Apple experimenting with a simple click-wheel interface - later to become synonomous with iPods. They even imagined digital currency exchangers that can convert one form of paper money into another.

Super Computers
Before there were the steel tower Macs, Apple’s top tier line of computers were called Quadras. They featured off white monolithic tower designs with the obligatory horizontal etching found on all Macs at the time. This concept demonstrates how Apple is beginning to design machines to utilize space better. No longer should they stand out as sore thumbs, but blend in and hide their computing prowess with doors, slits, complete with cable organization.

Entertainment Hub
There was a time when Apple considered expanding into the realm of home entertainment. Devices that looked sexy enough to fit in modern living rooms. Concepts with flat screens, projection technologies, and even intergrated computers (cough: iMac).

Portable Computing
During this time, Apple outsourced almost all of its design and there was a real focus on miniturizing the computing experience for mobility. They envisaged desktop computers specifically for work cubicals and even what looks like precusors to handheld computers like the Sony UX and OQO.

Graphics Professionals
Apple still dominated the print and publishing world. There was a real need to understand what digital artists needed from their computers. The single button mouse just wasn’t gonna cut it. Apple prototyped a whole range of pointer contraptions to fulfill every niche. They even saw a need for a pen tablet, 15 years before the Wacom Cintiq came to market.

The Future
Before the return on Steve Jobs, Apple looked for a way to evolve their design DNA. The monolithic off white forms turned dark. Extreme geometry was introduced and for a time, Apple’s army of designers envisioned a future of dark, sleek appliances unlike anything else in the computing world. Several black Macintoshes were even produced but when Steve Job returned to the helm in 1997, that design aesthetic was killed off and the translucent iMac was born.

Pump-up Your RideAh…the pleasure of a skateboard! A teen’s companion and a worrying mother’s bane, this piece of board has transformed form a plane plank to a glitzy glam doll with finesse. Right now lets take a look at another kind that markets itself as a Pumpboard. Rolling up like a licorice wheel, this board can be pumped up with compressed air to make it a taut steady ride.

According to Maciej, you need to detach the rear axel before rolling the board up. I wouldn’t say that I’m totally sold on this concept, but it does make the skateboard very portable and easy to stow.

  Pump-up Your Ride
It’s A Key Thing

The Floor Is A-Shining Under My FeetThe inspiration for the 2009 collection of floor designs from Bolon comes from the world of magic, and the colors are reminiscent of dusk - the change from light to dark, shadowy and shimmering at the same time. Check out these flooring materials called Twilight. There’s no LED backing or some magical elf beneath it. It’s the result of a unique material woven to create plays of light and shadow. I wouldn’t mind have these in our office (hint hint Bolon).
