NX is meant to represent the "Next Generation" (yea, I know, it's a stretch
;-). As to why, well like any good marketing campaign, a name "change" is
supposed to signify some significant (BTW, is that redundant?) event or change.
In this case, Unigraphics V19.0 also represents the first real opportunity to
deliver on the promise of merging together the best of both Unigraphics and
I-DEAS. Granted, the process has just started and no one expects that an I-DEAS
user could move to Unigraphics now and have support for all of the data and
capabilities that he has in I-DEAS today, but that being said, the process has
started and Unigraphics V19.0 (AKA, Unigraphics NX I) is that start.
We know that it will take additional work and releases (probably at least 2 more
beyond NX I) before we will reach the point where we will be confident that an
I-DEAS user could move and retain both the value of his assets (the data in his
files) and the most important aspects of the functionality and capabilities that
brought him to I-DEAS in the first place. Now that does not mean that there is
not currently an opportunity to leverage the efforts that we have expended to
date (and which will be expended for the next release) and in fact, we fully
expect that some I-DEAS users will opt to start the process of moving to the
"NX" side sooner rather then later, but we also recognize that there is more to
be done to provide a complete solution and so we will be in this transition
stage for awhile and so we decided to highlight this era (and make a little
marketing splash along the way) with a "name change". Therefore you will see
that the next several releases will carrying the "NX" label. |
