New and optimised 5-axis toolpaths in WorkNC Version 17 – setting new standards in easy to use 5-axis programming
Sescoi’s WorkNC CAM/CAD software is unique in including automatic 5-axis programming, where WorkNC 3-axis toolpaths are converted into 5-axis toolpaths in its Auto 5 module.
Complementing Auto 5, Sescoi has optimised and introduced new simultaneous 5-axis toolpaths for specific applications, enabling engineers to use shorter and more rigid cutters and higher feedrates. The 5-axis Rolling operation machines with the side of the cutter following a curve. The resulting toolpath can have a stock allowance which can be removed in several passes and will enable the machining of surfaces more quickly than with ball ended cutters. Reduced vibration and improved surface finish in Version 17 is achieved with the angular smoothing tolerance in WorkNC.
The 5-axis Planar Finishing allows the tool to cut normal to the surface, or with a lead angle for improved cutting conditions, ideal for machining shallow surfaces with a bull nose cutter where precise control of the cutter trajectory is required. The 5-axis parallel to curve produces a toolpath which changes shape between boundary curves, machining undercut conditions to create a particularly smooth finish while keeping the tool normal to the surface, ideal for applications where there are obstacles to machine around on the surface.
Cutting inlet manifold pipes is complex. The new 5-axis Tube Pocketing operation in WorkNC Version 17 is designed to solve this very special case. The toolpath will follow the inside walls of the tube or deep cavity spiralling down to depth, or cutting layer by layer to give the required surface finish. An attraction point above the cavity optimises the cutter angles enabling the tool to reach the maximum depth possible without collision.
The second new routine introduced in Version 17 is 5-axis Blade Machining which allows level by level machining of turbine blades. The cutter moves around the blade, machining undercut conditions as it proceeds while considering the limits of the machine tool, greatly simplifying the programming of complicated blade shapes.
Trimming of components is a very common use for 5-axis machine tools. WorkNC 5-axis Profiling allows the tool to follow a curve with the cutter perpendicular to the surface. Selecting the height of the cutter relative to the surface facilitates trimming of vacuum formed parts, while the collision checking in WorkNC considers the kinematics of the machine, introducing retract and flip movements where necessary.
All the 5-axis toolpaths in WorkNC can be graphically visualised and verified in WorkNC VisuNC, enabling the operator to see the exact movement of the machine and tooling to ensure the cutter path will be error free. Comprehensive simultaneous 5-axis toolpaths in WorkNC Version 17, together with the revolutionary WorkNC Auto 5 module, combine to offer users the capability of maximising the productivity of their 5-axis machines, with software tools capable of programming the most demanding parts simply. |
