PLANO, Texas – UGS Corp., a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, today announced the immediate availability of I-deas® 12 NX Series software, one of its market-leading integrated computer-aided design, manufacturing and engineering analysis (CAD/CAM/CAE) software solutions.
I-deas NX Series, along with the recently released NX™ 4, is part of UGS’ strategy to support a unified offering representing the world’s most advanced digital product development solution.
“With the release of I-deas 12 NX Series closely following NX 4, UGS continues its goal of evolving the best attributes of these two flagship products into a single, rich solution for digital product development,” said Ken Versprille, partner and PLM Research director, Collaborative Product Development Associates, LLC. “The company has taken a very realistic and methodical approach to this massive endeavor while continuing to meet the needs of its diverse customer base. UGS shows a unique strength in this area, as I know of no other company in its industry that has achieved such success.”
“I-deas 12 NX Series is another key milestone release in our I-deas to NX roadmap,” said Chuck Grindstaff, executive vice president of Products, UGS. “We are pleased that I-deas customers worldwide are responding to the technology we are delivering. This latest release provides a smooth transition path with shared licensing, multi-CAD capabilities and additional workflow productivity improvements. I‑deas customers are already replacing their existing I-deas Team Data Manager (TDM) tools with Teamcenter Engineering, which illustrates their readiness to migrate to NX.”
New Multi-CAD Capabilities
I-deas 12 NX Series features new capabilities for working in a multi-CAD environment. This release leverages UGS’ JT Open proven lightweight format for data sharing among various CAD applications. New capabilities include: measure to underlying precise geometry, measure to facet point/line/plane, align instance, create sections, attach product and manufacturing information (PMI), create constraints, and plot/print instances.
“Multi-CAD issues routinely confront major corporations worldwide,” said Versprille. “With the release of I-deas 12 NX Series and a number of JT-oriented enhancements, UGS is demonstrating the ability to mix lightweight and native databases in an assembly. This approach represents a major competitive advantage for UGS and a very practical solution for companies faced with multi-CAD environments.”
Workflow Productivity Enhancements
I-deas 12 NX Series features user-driven productivity enhancements in design, assembly, 3D annotation, drafting and simulation.
“I-deas 12 NX Series addresses many of the user communities’ top priorities and provides immediate benefit in terms of productivity enhancements and multi-CAD access,” said Monica Schnitger, senior vice president of Market Analysis, Daratech Inc. “The release also furthers UGS’ vision for migrating its I-deas base to NX with sophisticated tools to evaluate the impact of such a change. As a result, users seem increasingly able to migrate.”
“We create many section views on our large assembly drawings,” said Egon Welter, CAD manager, Siemens. “The ability to create 3D section views is a huge productivity boost, and the new ‘section of a section’ is a great enhancement.”
Moving Towards Full NX Implementation
With the release of I-deas 12 NX Series, UGS provides tools to successfully migrate to NX. A new shared licensing capability allows I-deas customers to operate both I-deas NX Series and NX from the same license. Customers can become familiar with the NX environment and see firsthand the benefits of transitioning to NX through new features, such as data and custom programming migration tools.
“We are looking forward to implementing I-deas 12 NX Series, as there are many enhancements that will collectively provide significant benefit to all our users,” said Tom Guant, engineering services manager at IMMI in Indiana. “Furthermore, this is a key release for us as we begin to migrate toward full NX.”
