Delcam launches the world's first Total Modelling CAD solution. This patented Delcam develOPMent will bring together elements of Delcam's Power Solution software range in a unique, fully-integrated combination of solid modelling, surface modelling, triangle modelling, reverse engineering and decoration techniques. Total Modelling will give designers the ability to create innovative products more easily and more quickly, without the restrictions of conventional CAD software.  
After a period when solid modelling was the dominant design philosophy, recent years have seen an increased recognition of the importance of surface modelling. These two approaches are now combined in a variety of "hybrid modellers", including Delcam's PowerSHAPE software.  
  
Total Modelling extends hybrid modelling to include other design techniques, including the reverse engineering and triangle modelling capabilities of CopyCAD, and the relief modelling and decoration options within ArtCAM. For the first time, design elements created within either CopyCAD or ArtCAM will be able to be included in the history tree of operations inside PowerSHAPE. As a result, designers will be able to move between the different types of modelling more easily and see more quickly the effects on the overall design of any changes in a single element.
   
The range of potential applications of Total Modelling is extremely wide. It includes items like packaging, footwear, ceramics and toys, and any other product where complex decoration can add value. Logos, textures and other decorations will be able to be incorporated into product designs more readily to help reinforce branding of products. Modification of complex designs will become much easier and quicker, making it possible to create a greater selection of alternatives when presenting proposals for new designs.
  
Total modelling will also help to reduce many product development cycles involving the use of rapid prototypes. In many cases, these prototypes are modified by hand to improve either their appearance or performance. Duplicating these modifications in the CAD model can be extremely difficult. Many companies have reverse engineering equipment to capture the changes but then must use difficult and time-consuming techniques to convert the digitised data into CAD surfaces, stitch the new surfaces back into the model and then produce a new STL file for the next round of prototype manufacture, testing and modification.
   
With Total Modelling, the digitised data representing the changes to the model can be converted into a triangle file with a single command within CopyCAD. The file can then be combined with the surface or solid model of the complete part in PowerSHAPE, without any need to change the triangles into surfaces. A new STL file of the modified model can then be produced from the combined data. Even when a fully-surfaced CAD model is required after the design has been finalised, the surfacing work will only need to be done once, rather than having to be completed after every change to the model.
   
A similar approach will be possible when producing variants on existing products. For example, with medical products, footwear or bespoke sports equipment, there is often a need to undertake small modifications to the same general design in order to meet the exact requirements of the patient or customer. As with prototypes, many of these customisations are made by hand and require a series of iterations before the final design is reached. Using Total Modelling will again both simplify and speed up the development process, as well as helping to ensure that the client receives exactly the product he needs.
  
The Total Modelling concept is currently undergoing testing in a number Delcam customer sites, to further develop the range of applications and to quantify the savings that are possible in both product development time and cost. The technology will become available generally with the launch of PowerSHAPE 5 later this year.
