“Design” experience is an essential prerequisite for ME.
  
Experience with structural design: this include develOPMent of a product from scratch, be able to communicate in the right way with product and marketing management as well as with production management is necessary.   
A good knowledge of all available manufacturing techniques and their properties is necessary.  
A good knowledge of materials e.g plastics, metals, adhesives is necessary.  Also good understanding of surface treatment processes is required.  
Following skills are a plus (at least familiar with one):  
Heat study and simulation: theoretical knowledge and practical experience.  Be able to analyze and optimize the design.  
Strength verification: be able to setup a model for FEM analysis, calculate, verify and optimize designs
