On the way to knowledge-based CAM programming
With the release of hyperMILL version 9.5 in EUROMOLD 2005, OPEN MIND Technologies AG is introducing a groundbreaking solution for the secure back-up and flexible recall of existing knowledge – the decisive step towards knowledge-based CAM Programming. Furthermore, for ease of programming this version will offer powerful new develOPMents in 5-axis machining and collision-avoidance technology that guarantee even greater process security.
With hyperMILL, OPEN MIND Technologies AG is developing forceful strategies that reduce programming complexity while simultaneously raising both process reliability and machining quality. The most impressive example of this is “feature technology.” Using this technology, geometry information from both surface and solid models can be recognised and processed. Feature recognition takes place across the entire model, recognising holes as well as other geometries including pockets and plane levels. This means that CAM programming information that the designer has already inputted will be utilised. hyperMILL stores recognised features in a list. The user can then reassign them directly to a machining. It is precisely here that OPEN MIND Technologies AG applies its concept of knowledge-based CAM programming.
Production know-how in database-based macros
Version 9.5 of hyperMILL makes it possible to combine machining strategies and tool information in one macro, and to file them together in a single database. With the maintenance of manufacturing information in one database, the user can search for specific criteria and seize upon the appropriate macros straightaway. This automation combined with the simplified allocation of features and macros reduces programming complexity to an absolute minimum. With this technology, difficult tasks can be completed in a very short time. OPEN MIND Technologies AG has already successfully proved that this solution leads to drastic time-savings with their workflow-oriented CAM programming software hyperFACT. Customers report time-savings in NC programming of up to 30 percent and more.
In addition to reducing the programming time, this concept offers a further decisive advantage: the database grows with every newly programmed component, allowing users to fall back on previous know-how when programming. In the next phase, hyperMILL developers will create a solution for allocating access rights. A task-orientated allocation of access rights assists a firm’s workflow and quality assurance.
New 5Axis features
The milling and stop surface boundaries for 3D machining, already introduced in version 9, are now also available for 5Axis machining. That means that now, in addition to the conventional method of restricting using curves, milling and stop boundaries can also be defined. This enables machining ranges for smoothing and material machining to be defined precisely. As a result the user achieves machining paths that are considerably more precise and avoids touching the bordering areas. Traversing a clearance plane over the section is often very time-consuming, or sometimes even impossible, because of the axes overshooting the tool paths. That’s why for 5Axis machining, the common retract to the clearance plane has been completed by a radial safty retract. With this it is even possible to generate a collision-free path between two positions near the component.
Optimised Collision Avoidance
With the previous introduction of automatic collision control and avoidance, OPEN MIND Technologies has already set a high benchmark. This is ultimately the decisive element for reliable 5-axis simultaneous machining. This well-established concept now includes an adaptive collision-avoidance facility. Now perfectly round and balanced machine movements will be generated against the geometry and kinematics of the machine. This reduces both the machining time and the stress on the machine.
Interface to VERICUT
Via a new interface, VERICUT-users can now smoothly transfer hyperMILL -generated NC data into VERICUT simulation software.
