System Wide Changes
Discoverability and Ease of Use
A primary focus of NX 4 is to make its functionality easily discoverable for new or casual users. This means enabling you to easily do two things:
find the tools and commands you need
learn how to successfully use those tools and commands
To easily find the tools and commands you need the most, NX 4 introduces the concept of "Roles". And to learn how to successfully use those tools, NX 4 makes your preferred dialog presentation the default. The following paragraphs further explain these concepts.
Roles
NX 4 introduces the concept of a customized user interface called a "role." Roles provide a set of focused, trimmed down menus and toolbars, targeted towards the particular user’s needs, which makes finding commands significantly easier.
The Essentials role provides all the tools you need to complete straightforward tasks. Toolbars are presented with large easy–to–see icons with the icon name underneath. Both toolbars and menus have reduced content. We recommend this role for most users, especially new users or those who don't use NX regularly.
The Advanced role provides a wider set of tools to support straightforward and advanced tasks. To allow the software to display additional tools, it presents toolbars with icon only. Menus in this role hide some tools. We recommend this role for those who need extra tools and already recognize most NX toolbar icons.
For more details, see Roles in the Gateway folder.

Dialog Presentation
When learning a new tool or command, usability testing shows us that NX users immediately open a full dialog rather than use a dialog bar. Therefore, for commands that offer both presentation styles, NX 4 introduces the behavior of automatically opening a dialog rather than displaying a dialog bar as the default. You can still set up the software to display dialog bars instead of full dialogs by changing the system default. However, we expect most users to benefit significantly from the NX 4 defaults.
Selection
NX 4 allows you to select any object at any time. Therefore, the NX 3 selection modes for General Objects, Features, and Components are no longer needed.
NX now represents QuickPick as a standard list of object names. You can filter by All Objects, Construction Objects, Features, Body Objects, Components or Annotations.
Also, NX 4 now infers your intent. For example, asking to blank a feature no longer displays an error message, but instead blanks the body associated with the feature. |
