1.        Overview
Xyron engineering resins are modified polyphenylene ether (m-PPE) resins, composed of PPE together with polystyrene (PS), polyamide (PA), polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), or other polymer. Three of these polymeric alloys -Xyron PPE/PS, PA/PPE, and PPE/PS—are described in this handbook.
    Xyron PPE/PS is amorphous in molecular structure. It is characterized by outstanding halogen-free flame retardancy, electrical properties, hot –water resistance, and workability, together with high levels of heat resistance, dimensional stability, and mechanical properties.
    Xyron PA/PPE provides especially high resistance to oil and to heat, is superior to polyamide resins in dimensional stability, and equals or exceeds polyamide resins in other important performance characteristics.
    Xyron PPS/PPE combines the inherent advantages of crystalline-polymer PPS and amorphous-polymer PPE, while reducing or eliminating the disadvantages of each, and is particularly characterized by its high heat and chemical resistance.

  3.1 Overview
    Xyron PPE/PS is amorphous in molecular structure. It is outstanding in halogen free flame retardancy, electrical properties, hot-water resistance, and workability, and provides high levels of heat resistance, dimensional stability, and mechanical properties.
    As a polymer alloy of polyphenylene ether and polystyrene, it constitutes the main category of Xyron resins, in a broad array of types and grades ranging from non-reinforced high-flow to ultra low warpage, high flame retardancy, and other special versions. As shown in the following sections, it provides outstanding performance in fields of application ranging from electronic and electrical to automotive and industrial.

3.2.1 Overview
   The non-reinforced high-flow Xyron PPE/PS grades are designed primarily for high flowability, with heat resistance as a secondary consideration. They are Xyron 220V, 220Z, 240V, 240Z, 240W, 100V, 100Z, 140V, 140Z, and 200H.
   Xyron 220V, 240V, 220Z, and 240Z are particularly appropriate for housings and other large-size products, due to their combination of flame-retardancy and flowability.
   Xyron 100V, 140V, 100Z, and 140Z provide maximal flowability.
   Xyron 240V, 240Z, 140V, and 140Z are formulated to minimize gas evolution and prevent the formation of mold deposits.
    All of these non-reinforced high-flow Xyron grades are designed to meet UL, CSA, and other strict standards, and are the materials of choice for business and communications equipment housings

a.        Molding conditions
Refer to section 3.8, PPE/PS molding conditions and notes.
b.        Flowability
Throughout this handbook, flowability is generally expressed in terms of spiral flow. The following figures show the relation between spiral flow and molding conditions for the non-reinforced high-flow grades.

c.        Mold shrinkage
Xyron PPE/PS is intrinsically low in mold shrinkage, and its variation with changes in molding conditions is generally less than ±0.1 percentage point. The following figures show the relation between molding conditions and mold shrinkage, as determined for flat molded plates by the Asahi Kasei Method.

d.        Reworkability
Because of its excellent stability, Xyron PPE/PS is easier to rework than most other resins. Reworking usually consists of using regrind from sprues, runners, and defective molded parts. Care is always necessary to exclude foreign matter from the regrind, particularly for enclosures or other products requiring good external appearance, as foreign matter may degrade the appearance and other properties.
  As a general rule, the mix of virgin and regrind Xyron may include up to 20% regrind. The following figures provide a basic reference on the influence of Xyron regrind on color and tensile properties.

  Xyron PPE/PS is subject to discoloring and properties deterioration under exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet rays, as shown in the following figures.
