Microsoft, Dassault in Pact
Big PLM deal steals some of IBM's thunder; unlike ERP and CRM, ISVs in this application area friendly to Microsoft, says analyst

Microsoft and product lifecycle management (PLM) software specialist Dassault Systemes have signed a high-profile partnership agreement, creating natural speculation about what this means for Dassault's partnership with IBM.
As it turns out, the deal does impact the IBM relationship. "Dassault's creating two distinct platforms to offer customers," says analyst John Moore of ARC Advisory Group. One of those platforms will be IBM WebSphere-centric and the other will support the Microsoft .NET operating system, including SQL, BizTalk Server, SharePoint Portal Server, etc.
The reason for Dassault's diversification of system support lies in market forces, with one particularly powerful driver providing some of the justification. "I bet it was Boeing," says Moore. "They're using the Dassault platform for their 7E7 initiative, and probably didn't want to glue together Enovia on WebSphere and SmartTeam on .NET."
The reference to SmartTeam is a reminder that both it and Dassault Solidworks already ran in a Microsoft client environment, so Microsoft had at least a partial foothold in Dassault's stack.
That foothold has turned into a full-fledged partnership, with Microsoft's Bill Gates recently holding a joint conference with Dassault Systemes CEO Bernard Charles to trumpet the companies' joint plans.
While the substance of the plans is to prepare the Dassault product family for Microsoft, Gates and Charles also talked about working together to create an XML standard for 3D design products. So far, this is only a vision, but it is worth noting that Microsoft has other PLM relationships (such as with UGS) mired in proprietary technology, and therefore inimical to a move towards standards.
Turning back to IBM, Charles noted that Dassault had consulted its partner about the Microsoft deal and not encountered any resistance.
"IBM will have to rethink their strategy," says Moore. "This deal has the potential to shut IBM out from being a technology platform provider [in PLM] on the software side." The potential is strengthened by the fact that Microsoft does not field its own PLM product, making it easier for independent software vendors (ISVs) in this application area to partner with Microsoft. Contrast this state of affairs with Microsoft's competitive position in enterprise resource planning (ERP) and customer relationship management (CRM), which makes ISV partnership more difficult. But that doesn't mind Microsoft will stop trying, concludes Moore. "Microsoft would love to have more ERP companies do this."
